David Sackett and associates, in an editorial in the British Medical Journal in 1996, discussed EBM and defined it as, the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. EBM integrates individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research, to provide optimal care to patients. 3
