W ell begin by reviewing t hree nonprofit groups that accredit health care organizations. These are The Joint Commission, or TJC , URAC , which was originally known as the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance or NCQA . The following discussion will concern regulatory agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, a consumer protection agency that approves and regulates drugs and medical devices. Finally, professional associations will be considered in terms of their role in boosting the quality of the medical profession. 5
