This accreditation allows organizations to demonstrate that they are using the policies and procedures necessary to protect individuals health information and comply with privacy and security requirements specified within HIPAA , and within the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health act, or HITECH act . The HITECH Act extends HIPAA privacy and security requirements to third-party organizations that have access to electronic health information. 17
