Slide notes:Many surgical specialists see patients in outpatient clinics in addition to performing operations in hospitals and in outpatient surgical centers. For example, a patient with knee pain may be evaluated initially by an orthopedic surgeon in an outpatient specialty center. The patient may or may not have been referred by a primary care physician. After the evaluation, the patient may have knee surgery in a hospital and receive follow-up care in the orthopedic surgeons clinic. 12
