In summary, the VA and the Military Health System provide health care and other benefits for those who serve the U.S. The VA is a federal department and serves veterans after their discharge from service. The Military Health System is operated by the Department of Defense, and it serves veterans during their military service. Both organizations offer benefits to all uniformed personnel and their families. The goals are to enhance physical and mental health, provide logistical or financial assistance, and thank veterans and active-duty personnel for their service to the country. 21
